Tokyo is only about 100 km (60 miles) away, so a day trip is possible. You can take the bus or the train, with the bus being the cheaper option. A round trip costs about ¥4200. The time to and from Tokyo varies from slightly under 2 hours to 2 hours and 40 minutes depending on the direction, the day, the time of day and whether you go to Tokyo or Ueno station.  You can take the express trains called either Hitachi or Tokiwa. It costs about 4,810 yen each way and takes approximately 1 hour and 40 minutes. The local trains will cost approximately half of this, but the trip is much longer and you will need to change trains. If you want to save money, the bus is the better option.

 No. Given the responsibility that we have for interns and the problems that would occur if an accident took place, we would like interns to come to Japan with the understanding that they will not be driving cars, motorcycles or scooters. If interns choose to ride a bicycle, we suggest they exercise extreme caution due the differences in traffic patterns and driving culture between Japan and the west.

There are also night buses that leave from Mito and go to areas like Kyoto or up north. Other night buses from Tokyo go all over Japan. Traveling around Japan is quite easy and many interns have traveled with each other.
